The Legion Pool was officially opened in May 1975 on the site of the original American Legion Swimming Pool that was opened in 1937.

The original pool was dedicated on June 12, 1937 by Governor Gordon Browning and Senator George L. Berry. A Kingsport Times article from July 11, 1937 anticipated a crowd of 10,000 people (wow…10,000 people for a dedication of a swimming pool!)

The total cost of the land and construction of the pool was $53,000. Nearly forty years later the new pool cost a total of  $520,101.88.

A year after the pool was opened the American Legion donated the pool to the City of Kingsport and it and the new configuration built in 1975 has been operated by the city since.

  1. My grandmother and grandfather ran the snack bar at the American Legion pool for many years. They were Sherman and Ada Roberts.
