Rides, games, funnel cakes, hot dogs, cotton candy and
entertainment…The American Legion carnival is back!
The American Legion carnival is returning to Kingsport after a one year hiatus. The carnival will be held at a new location, the Kingsport Town Center (formally Fort Henry Mall), starting Tuesday July 30th and running until Sunday July 5th. The midway this year will be provided for the first time by a local carnival, the Nicely Family Midway of Kingsport. What a good way to support local!
The carnival used to be one of the most highly anticipated events of the summer time. I don’t think people get as excited about carnivals as they once did. Is it the influx of television, video games and movies on today’s teenagers or just a general changing of the times? It is hard to say really but there is still a sense of nostalgia that comes from discussion of carnivals past.
Looking at photographs of past carnivals it makes me think that they must have been fun and exciting, a real summer event to look forward to. Hopefully after last year’s absence of the carnival, people will be looking forward to its return!
The American Legion carnival started in 1929 as a fund-raiser and was held October 14-19 on Center Street in downtown Kingsport. The carnivals took place in the fall until 1936 when they became a summer affair.
The Archives of the City of Kingsport has some wonderful photographs of the carnival throughout the years. Take a look and hopefully you will get that nostalgic feeling and feel free to share your carnival memories!
